Tasting Notes:
Round blackberry, blueberry, currant, and raspberry. Soft finish with flowers and red cherry.
The Grapes:
Counoise, Carignane and Cinsaut are the grape varieties that make up this blend. They come from the same vineyards that produce my 100% varietal wines.
The Vineyards:
Counoise is from Frick's Estate Owl Hill Vineyard, on the southeast-facing hillsides near the winery. This tiny vineyard grows in rock, gravel and clay from decomposed Dry Creek Conglomerate soil. In this soil the vines have very low vigor.
Carignane is from the Feliz Creek area to the west of Hopland in Mendocino County. This is a head pruned, dry farmed (no irrigation)low yield vineyard with vines over 100 years old.
Cinsaut comes from bench land grown vines growing on bench land above the Dry Creek Valley . The vines are 46 years old and dry farmed.
The Wine:
An unusual blend of three obscure red Rhone grape varieties. The three grapes come together to make a complex delicious wine. Aged 23 months in small neutral oak barrels. Unfined/ unfiltered. Only 70 cases made. Drink now to 2015.
Serve with:
Moussaka, cassoulet, fried rice, grits, coconut curry with tofu, brie cheese, pork tenderloin, garlic mashed potatoes, pot roast with gravy, chicken fried steak
