Tasting Notes:
Very dark purple-red. Aromas of crushed cherries, currants and smoke. Plum, cherry, black currants. Dry tannins. Long lingering chewy finish with white pepper spice.
The Grape:
Noble Syrah was originally perfected in the Rhone River Valley of France. More ancient origins are speculated to be a cross between two now obscure varieties. The grape is very dark in color and when freshly crushed emits floral aromas. The vine is very vigorous and benefits from growing in poor soils.
The Vineyard:
This wine comes exclusively from Frick's Estate Owl Hill Vineyard; Syrah was planted here in 1988. This tiny vineyard’s ground is rock, gravel and clay from decomposed Dry Creek Conglomerate soil. In this soil the vines have very low vigor and they produce a limited crop with distinctive, full, rich and classic Northern Rhone character.
The Wine:
This wine is 100% Syrah. European in style. Reminiscent of Northern Rhone’s Cote Rotie with subtle fruit and red wine tannin. Classic elegant French character. A really lovely table wine.
Serve with:
Smoked tri tip, venison, short ribs of beef, triple crème brie, BBQ pork ribs, buffalo steak, grilled portobello mushroom, bacon.
